I have not attempted to watch series 3 of Sherlock, partly because I am not sure of the copyright law issues and that's  not the kind of thing I want to mess with as an American lawyer whose most important client is a giant British company, and partly because I want to watch with Mr. ZD and he won't participate in any cross-Atlantic viewing schemes.

Sigh.

I am of course torturing myself by reading reviews on fan sites and here is where I come to my bitchiness:
OH MY FUCKING GOD - if you hate the show so much, why are you haunting fan sites to post about how much you hate the fucking show the second the show is over??  Seriously, fuck that.

If you have constructive critisicm to share, please do, but for the love of all that is holy, stop swanning around like a drama queen and hating on my show pointlessly, when all I want to be able to do is watch, and I'm full of rage at PBS and BBC for not airing concurrently and it just makes me want to punch you in the face that you have the luxury of having been able to watch it and you nothing fucking nice to say.

ArgH!!

okay, so I just had to post that here instead of In response to the actual people who are hating on my boys...

My 13 year old son appears to have a girlfriend. She has a very unusual first name, and beyond that I don't know much about her except for the fact that she plays the violin, which is how they met. (My son plays the viola. I wanted him to play the cello but I lost that argument, mostly when my husband pointed out that the monthly rental of a viola is significantly less than the monthly rental of a cello.).

At any rate my son just came into our bedroom and asked if he could go to a "SCAT" meeting with GirlWithUnusualName after school. Husband said yes and our son left the room. I dissolved into hysterical inappropriate giggles and said, "I can't believe our son's first girlfriend is such a pervert! That's disgusting." Then I laughed some more. Husband laughed good-naturedly and said I was the pervert.

Husband assures me that SCAT is a "community action team" that plans drug free events like dances and Halloween parties, and not a meeting of poop enthusiasts. I'm guessing it was named by the most naive members of the PTA.

I'm still percolating a post on the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon and erotica in general, but I'm not ready to hit 'publish' on that just yet.

In the meantime, two questions:

1.  Has anybody else read Gone Girl?  And, if so, did the ending make you want to write vicious hate mail to the author or did you like it?

2.  The modern day Sherlock Holmes' CBS show on the fall line up, "Elementary" - is this a remake of BBC's Sherlock, or is this something separate entirely?

That is all.

I read this article this morning, Why I Love Weird Porn, which has very little to do with loving weird porn, and much more to do with appreciating communities that the Internet has fostered/allowed to flourish.

The author says, "There's a term in the fan fiction community, "drawerfic". It arises from the answer to "What was your first fanfic?" given by everyone who grew up pre-internet: "This thing I wrote in a notebook when I was 14 and kept in a drawer and never showed anyone." Every little girl making porn (and not all fic writers are girls and not all fanfic is porn, but they mostly are and an awful lot of it is) thought she was the only one. Her creativity came pre-stifled and then it was back to Gilligan's Island. Fan fiction only became a community, became huge, when these girls began meeting, began corresponding, began exchanging fictions as gifts and trades. First in homemade zines, then exploding beyond all measure on the internet. Now it's one of the largest gift economies on earth, with untold millions of words a day being exchanged, people (mostly women) making things in exchange for other things people made. There's your cognitive surplus right there."

Yesterday Jezebel.com featured a video of Alan Rickman, in extreme slo-mo, making a cup of tea.  (Here is a link:  http://jezebel.com/5910909/epic-tea-time-with-alan-rickman)

I use the phrase "making a cup of tea" loosely, because mostly this video makes me want to (tenderly) snatch his hand away from the tea bag and the luke warm water and shriek (tenderly), "THIS IS NOT HOW TEA IS PROPERLY MADE!!!!  WHY WOULD YOU COMMIT THIS CRIME AGAINST TEA???"  And then I want to boil some water and warm a teapot and make the man a whole pot of Irish Breakfast and just...watch him drink it.

But, despite the relative dullness and tea abuse featured in the video, the comments below the article led me to the very happy discovery that Alan Rickman recorded "My Mistress Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun" for a compilation of Shakespeare's Sonnets. So of course I had to purchase this track from emusic.com, and now I have listened to it three times and I have melted into a puddle in my office chair.  Here is a link to the track that someone (not me) has placed on youtube, so that you, too, can hear Snape read Shakespeare and melt into a puddle where ever you may be.  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qK-sQebRdiw&feature=related)

Since I started reading Harry Potter fanfiction (I guess about 8 months ago?  A year ago?) - I've been reading primarily Hermione-centric fics (Hermione/Snape, Hermione/Draco, Hermione/Harry, maybe an occasional Hermione/Ron if it's particularly well-written) ...but something I read yesterday in a Snape-centric fic has caused a curious little plot bunny to start frolicking in my brain, and made me wonder - does anyone know of any fics in which Snape is actually Harry's father, rather than James?  (I haven't been reading in this fandom long enough to know - maybe this is an idea that been done to death, maybe there are eleventy-billion "Snape is Harry's father" fics and I just haven't found them because anything tagged 'Snape/Harry' makes me want to run away very, very.  (For some reason I am deeply, deeply creeped out by the Snape/Harry pairings - I see that it's a huge part of the HP fandom, but it's just...not for me.)  Anyway, if you know if there are any, particularly any really good ones - can you send me in the right direction?

Why in the name of all that is Apple does my iPad keep losing connection to the wireless network in my own d%€m house???

Nothing else in our home has this problem, certainly not my kindle, which makes me wonder if I shouldn't have just gotten a Kindle Fire...

I would blame Apple, but neither Mr.ZD's nor my son's iPod Touches have this problem.

Grr.  Also, I f*^%king hate iTunes.  (For music and audiobooks, anyway.  I kind of like it for tv and movies.). (For my music and audiobooks, I am holding on to my Zune until Microsoft absolutely stops supporting it to the point I can't make it work anymore.  I love my Zune, seriously.  Love. It.  Why doesn't iTunes work as seamlessly as Zune?????)

Sorry.  End of rant.

I know I am years late to the HP fanfic party (but not to loving Harry Potter - I have loved Harry Potter forever) - but recently I find myself compulsively looking for Draco/Hermione fic...yeah, I know...I have no idea why I am intrigued by this, I was certainly perfectly happy to see Hermione with Ron in the actual epilogue of Deathly Hallows.

But, indulge me, LJ...anybody want to send me in the direction of any dark/broody/kinky (especially kinky) Draco/Hermione future or AU fic?

Or, alternately, anybody want to share where good Draco-Herminone fic gets posted on LJ?

I just finished re-reading the entire HP series.  (There are certain books I've read many times - 1 and 3, in particular.  But this is the first time I picked up book 1 and read straight through to book 7 without reading anything else, and only my second read of Books 5 and 7.  I am still not a huge fan of 5 because I hate Delores Umbridge with the same ferocity that I hate, say...George W. Bush and Rick Santorum).

Anyway, I have never been really interested in Harry Potter fic before, but now I'm curious.  Anybody on my flist have any HP fics or fic communities they can rec?

A few weeks ago I wrote a little Veronica Mars Logan POV ficlet for a contest at VMFICTITIOUS. It takes place during Season 1, Episode 5, You Think You Know Somebody, based on a prompt from [livejournal.com profile] wily_one24.

If you are interested in reading, it's here
[livejournal.com profile] vanessagalore wrote me a fabulous Christmas Present and it made me very happy and if you would like a fun and hot VM read to snuggle up with for some post-Christmas NC17 happiness you should go and read it here:

A while back [livejournal.com profile] vanessagalore, suggested I read "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. I finally got around to taking up her suggestion, and MY GOD, this book is GOOD. Wow. I have been sucked into this book like no other book since...um...Harry Potter, possibly. I have not finished it, so, no spoilers, please.

My husband and I took the kids to Chicago for the weekend, for no reason whatsoever except that they had Friday off. We had a lovely time, went to the Museum of Science and Industry, the American Girl Doll store (where I caved and purchased a doll for my daughter*) and ate yummy Vietnamese food at a very authentic restaurant across from the Argyle 'L' stop, and poked around a toy and game expo at Navy Pier. As luck would have it, there was a gigantic holiday parade on Michigan Avenue on Saturday night and it was probably fabulous, but the crowds were crazy so we decided to go find dinner instead.

I'm hungry for Leverage and Burn Notice fic. Anybody have anything to rec? Also, I'm curious to find some quality QAF fic? I'd love to see a Brian/Lindsey fic...I know that's weird. (But, I mean, there is a LOT of slash fic for non-canon pairings on other shows - wouldn't this mean there might be some straight fic from Queer as Folk fans? Somebody has to have written a Brian/Lindsey fic somewhere, right? Or not...)

* My daughter is Vietnamese, and I kind of have a beef with the fact that the American Girl dolls who are supposed to be Asian don't do a very good job at looking actually Asian. Karito kids does a better job with a doll whose eyes and skin tone match my daughters'...and she has Ling (the Karito Kids doll) - but she desperately wanted this other doll. Sigh.
